AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE TO CREATE A PUBLIC RELATIONS CAMPAIGN AND AN IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM FOR MEMBERS OF INDIAN NATIONS, TRIBES AND PUEBLOS.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:

     SECTION 1. APPROPRIATION.--One million dollars ($1,000,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the state department of justice for expenditure in fiscal year 2026 to facilitate the creation of a public relations campaign to apprise New Mexico residents of their rights if they are in danger of deportation or harassment by federal immigration officers. The campaign shall include the creation of an identification system for members of Indian nations, tribes and pueblos to provide verification of tribal membership, as well as a telephone hotline for verification of citizenship status. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2026 shall revert to the general fund.
